What could we do with 20 people?

The July 2010 Team

After my first couple of trips to Mississippi, I found that I started getting concerned when I didn’t have “enough” people signed up for the trips. In my mind, anything less than 10-15 people seemed inadequate. What God has taught me over the past 3 years is that HE is more than enough. HE and I can accomplish anything that HE wants done…as long as I am willing. Time and time again, HE has sent the right people, and the right number of people, whether the team is large OR small. I stand amazed.

John 15:17 and Mark 12:31 both quote Jesus’ words: “Love. Love your neighbor; love each other.” I have spent most of my life helping my church family, my friends, my own family. Why? Because it’s easy to help people you know. But Jesus didn’t say, “Love the people you know. Love the people you are friends with.” He simply said, “Love them all.” When I started going to Mississippi in 2007, I went because I had construction skills. Over time, God has taught me to open up and love those around me and to care about those that I don’t even know. That was a foreign concept for me before the DiRT Ministry. As a result of my obedience to His call, I have been blessed with new friends, unforgettable experiences, and ribs….ohhhhh, the ribs…..(let’s just say that God can work through ribs, amen?)

I have come to terms with the fact that not everyone will go to Mississippi (a hard lesson for me, to be perfectly honest). I have also accepted the fact that HE knows best and I don’t need to worry about the team. I just have to tell people about the opportunity. Just as I have been blessed financially as a result of our commitment to tithing, I have been richly blessed in so many ways by giving my time to DiRT. Have I sacrificed vacation and finances in order to go? You bet, but WOW! What a difference He has made in my life as a result.

I can’t wait for this trip in November, and I hope we pack it out because of the opportunity before us. But if there are 3 of us, we will do His work and He will be glorified! (I’m still praying for 20, though!)
